during the whole operation (several minutes to several hours depending on the size of the data, the speed of the disks, etc.) the data stored on the share will not be accessible. I had to hastily cobble together a Perl script to scan my folders and list all names that were too long. If a single existing folder or file exceeds this length, the operation will not start, without telling you which folder(s) or file(s) do not meet this requirement. no folder or file name should exceed 143 characters. If there is not enough available space, the operation will not start.
This is done by the system, but keep in mind that it requires free space at least equal to the size of the data contained in the share. encrypting an existing share containing data means copying the data. So I decided to encrypt the shared folders containing sensitive personal data, and here is my feedback. First of all I'd like to thank this sub because a recent thread made me realize that if my NAS was stolen, all they had to do was mount the disks in another machine to access my personal data.
